  1. Jayla - Your reflection on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill really beautifully captures its core message of self-discovery and independence. Lauryn’s words remind us that true success and peace come from defining ourselves rather than letting others shape who we are—something especially meaningful during our college years, as we try to figure out who we are. Great Choice!

Alyson - Your connection to The Spins by Mac Miller perfectly shows how music can mark moments in our lives. The song’s carefree, nostalgic tone mirrors the excitement and freedom of senior year, making it a timeless anthem for celebrating youth and new beginnings. I really like it, great choice!

  2. Jayla - I love that Lauryn Hill song because she opens up about herself. Your explanation of failed success and comparison of parents wishes and our desires is spot on. We should focus on what we want to be and reflect on what mistakes we made and push forward.

Logan - I never listened to Deftones but your description is intriguing. Bullying can be very harsh and traumatic as it either leads someone down darkness or some type of change. The fact that the singer expresses his self improvement in a negative tone is so realistic because sometimes we better ourselves and hate the reason why.

Alyson- I definitely relate to what your saying, Senior year of highschool I had The Spins by Mac Miller on repeat so it definitely gives me nostalgia for that year. It just shows how music really connects all of us, as well as connects us to the past.

Logan- I haven't really listened to that many Deftones songs beside the more popular ones but your districption has definitely intrigued me. It seems that sometimes people really don't learn to stand on their own until someone pushes them down. Sometimes the path to finding your own Agency is hard, and I could see how someone could view that journey in a negative light.

  4. Seli - I am also a very big weeknd fan and believe baptized in fear is done beautifully and does represent everything you talked about. It is an emotional song and you related it back to education wonderfully.

Yasmin - The song you chose is one of my favorites by J cole. The way you described the song is wonderful and I believe you grasped the meaning of the lyrics. I also relate to the lyrics just like you do.

  5. Logan - I enjoy the concept of a song that talks about the somewhat negative aspects of having to find your own agency. Sometimes that journey can be difficult and the journey can be a bit forced upon you.

Alpha - I think that’s where is the love is a good song to display the sentiment of having hope for the younger generation. It critiques societal issues while still emphasizing a positive outlook.

  6. 8TEEN (Khalid)

I chose this song for my last of the minimum songs because listening to the song now for this project I am realizing I have never really related to anything more in a specific moment of time. I say this because the song itself encapsulates what it felt like to be 18 falling in love for the first time, dealing with strict parents, doing random stuff with my friends, and just driving around living my life. After doing a little research on this song I remember the fact that the artist, Khalid, was actually 18 when he wrote and released the entire album making sense why everyone I know related immensely to the entire album. I have chosen this lyric “Because I'm eighteen, And I still live with my parents, Yeah they're not like yours, Well yours are more understanding,” because of the fact that when I was 18 COVID was really at its peak and no one was going anywhere or doing anything, to put this into perspective I graduated in 2021. This lyric really hits home for me because I was seeing some of my friends' parents be a little lenient when it came to allowing my friends to leave the house and do things with others, whereas the only thing I was allowed to do during COVID was go to a soccer field and train.
I also feel like at the time this song played highly to what was trending at the time in terms of the pop culture of being a teenager going through high school/college between the years of 2017-2022.

Akiko- Love your song choice! SOAD is a great example of a band that tackles a lot of serious social and political issues in their music. Kind of wish I thought of them for this project too.
Jayla- I used this exact Lauryn Hill song too, It’s funny and interesting seeing how our paragraphs compare and contrast on what we got from the song. It’s a great album and a great choice from it!

  8. Ireland- I loved how your song choice had such a cool story! Its really touching on how your parents played this song while driving up to move in. Its moments like this that when songs are imbedded into our memories.
Presley- I really resonate with the lyrics of "Fifteen" too! I think the lyric you chose to highlight can relate to coming to college because honestly, I am so still trying to figure out my future.

  9. Jayla - I really love this song choice as it has a very good message about not following what others want us to and instead of being the version other people want, you make your own path. I think it's a great song to choose!
Ireland - Love this song choice! How you described the song made it easy to figure out how the song went. You also telling the reasons for his lyrics or purpose of the song was well done as well.

  10. Ireland - I thought your story about your dad playing this song for you was super funny and reminded me of something my dad would do. I also like the message of the song and how it talks about the parents as well as the students.

Alyson - I relate to your connection with The Spins so much because I also remember it being played all the time during my senior year. It makes me feel super nostalgic about high school.

  11. Matt here-
Yasmin - I really like the song you chose. I've always thought that J Cole does a great job at storytelling through his music compared to his peers. This song serves as a poignant reminder to appreciate the things you have in life.
Alyson- I also like the song you chose. I think that it is a great song that brings an upbeat vibe whenever you hear it. I remember hearing this song a lot during grad party season.

  12. Yasmin- i really love the song love yourz also i think it’s actually a great motivational song and it reminds you that everyone has their own life and no one can have a life that’s better then yours
Jaylin- I also listen to fourfive seconds it could be a great motivational song to get you out start your week off and prepare you to have a great week

  13. Jayla- I love Lauryn Hill and I love the song choice. I do agree Lauren uses this song as a great way to remind us that understanding ourselves is important.Your post was really cool too because it made me think about how the song kinda asks you to ignore what is told by society and get our own truth.

Alpha- I also really love this song. This song was on repeat when I was younger. I like how you broke this song down because it brings awareness but also reminds us that we can fight back with unity, which is something you pointed out.

  14. Alpha- I really liked your song because I related to it a lot during freshman year. I thought it was so cute how you went to the concert and cried. Freshman year in college is all about crying and building a 'campus' family.
Jaylin - I liked your song because I too was young listening to it when I had no business. You reminded me how good the song is. It's so relatable because in college ( or life in general ), we rush trying to get to Friday. - Jayla Alston

Jeremy - Been a while since I heard Pearl Jam, but you bringing it up instantly reminded me what a harrowing song it was. It reminded me of one of my own picks, Tyler, The Creator's "Pigs", which also centers around a kid who gets bullied and ends up taking a gun to school. Though, that song is more from the perspective of the kid rather than a classmate.

Presley - I also thought about putting Fifteen on my list, so cool to see a similar wavelength! I really like how much it portrays the tiny worldview that we hold onto as kids, how little we truly know.

Jayla- I loved the song you picked because I love Lauryn Hill. I have listened to this song multiple times, however you put it into a different perspective for me. I never thought about the song like how you described it. Now this song takes on a whole different meaning for me because I agreed with what said about how we try to be what our parents want us to be instead of “finding our own destiny.” When I was figuring out what I wanted to do in the future, my dad wanted me to do something in his field, which is a government job, but that’s not what I wanted to do but I did at one point consider it because it’s what he wanted me to do.
Alyson- I also liked the song you chose because I remember always playing this song during my senior year. It was always being played at every senior event and it is just so nostalgic to be looking back on senior year and high school and seeing how far i’ve come. I also like how you mentioned how this song isn’t always about good things, it’s also about the overwhelming experience of being young and the pressures that come with growing up and graduating school.

  17. (Alyson) I love the Spins by Mac Miller! This is just a feel good song and reminds me of the simplicity of life back in high school compared to university.

  18. I picked Lexi’s and Mohammad’s songs because they both connect to mine in unexpected ways. Lexi chose “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House, which feels like the hopeful predecessor to my own pick, “Sleeping In” by The Postal Service. Both songs blend a kind of dreamlike synth and steady rhythm that make you feel like you’re floating through the message instead of being lectured by it. I think that’s part of what makes this genre of protest music powerful it reaches your emotions first (hence the name ‘emo music’), then your logic. While Lexi’s song is quietly defiant, reminding people not to give up hope in the face of systemic problems, mine feels more burned out. “Sleeping In” carries this sense of collective fatigue, like we’re still fighting the same battles but with heavier hearts. Hearing the two side by side made me realize how the emotional tone of activism has shifted over the last few decades. Both artists are singing to the same people, about the same world, but one says keep dreaming, and the other whispers I’m sleeping in.
Then there’s Mohammad’s Marina FM Morning Podcast intro, which hit me on a totally different level because it comes from a more personal angle rather than the literal approach of connecting music to education. His reflection about listening to it with his family on the way to school reminded me of my pick “Vuela Vuela” by Magneto. I love that connection because it reminds me that education isn’t always critical or academic, sometimes it’s deeply personal. My pick had nothing to do with school in a literal way, it’s a song I listen to with my favorite colleagues at work, where I ask them questions about their school experience. They play this song a lot at work, because they love it and it reminds them of childhood. Mohammad’s song reminded him of his past, while mine inspires me for the future. I love that Mohammad shared something from his experience just like Andrea and Pio share theirs and I hope more spaces create opportunities like this where we can all share and actively engage with each other’s cultures.
Together, these songs remind me that education is truly a social science, and we can grow to understand more about what learning is or what school is like through mediums like music. It’s both objective and personal which is fun to hold together, and everyone’s experience is so different, yet we all share the experience of school/education. This was fun.

  21. 8TEEN picked by Kailei is a good pick, I fell in love with the song before I turned 18 and then listened to the song ever since, It bring back so much nostalgia and memories, it also makes me a bit sad that I can't listen to the song with that same bliss when I was 18.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, I feel like anyone can relate to relate to it at any point of there life.
