Write about whether you think New Kid is a good choice of a book to use to begin to tie together some of the things we have been discussing all semester (schooling, the purposes of education, opportunity in the U.S., race/class, to name a few). If you don't think it is a great choice, please suggest another reading or source.

Elena here: I definitely believe that New Kid is a good choice of book to tie in all of the subjects we've been discussing this semester. It has a lot of commentary on the school system and how race and class interconnect. I would definitely continue showing this book to students in the future. I feel like everybody can gain something from reading this book. Especially future teachers as well. Plus the book in fun, easy to read, and makes such good commentary on serious topics.
ReplyDeleteI think New Kid is a good choice because it discuses the purposes of education and the role of race and class in students’ experiences. The novel uses Jordan's story to show how education is about academic success and navigating identity/social dynamics. This story is relatable and New Kid is a fitting book to talk about the ideas we have learned this semester.
ReplyDeleteYasmin: I think New Kid was a good choice of book to use. It definitely had some realness to it when it came to having to deal with racial differences when traveling to schools that aren't as diverse. The author did a great job with providing insight with that.
ReplyDeleteAlyson: I believe that new kid is a wonderful book to start off for this subject. It represents race and even social cclasses within a classroom and I feel like we have heavily focused on both of those subjects. I like how it shows everything through the eyes of the vicitm and he does happen to be a young boy. This allows it to feel real.
ReplyDeleteNew kid was a good book it definitely showed the diversity between race in schools. It also gave real events that happens in schools.-Ziyen
ReplyDeleteI think New Kid is a good book to end the semester because not only is it a good book, it was a good book about schooling being both an academic space and a place where race, class, and identity, shape opportunity. It showed a good example of social belonging, which I liked, and the lack of it.
